US Army Corps of Engineer officer Leslie Groves, who supervised the construction of the Pentagon, was appointed as the leader of the Manhattan project. Leslie wanted J. Robert Oppenheimer to be the head scientist, although Oppenheimer had some conflicts regarding being a Soviet spy, Leslie still wanted him as the head scientist because of his immense knowledge and theories in science and physics. Oppenheimer directed the Los Alamos laboratory, which was the laboratory that designed the bombs.
